The Racer’s Wish List
What do runners really want from races and race directors?

How did you feel about your last race? Was it what you expected? Did you get what you wanted? In early fall, I conducted an admittedly unscientific yet exhaustive online survey, asking dedicated road racers what’s most important to them when they pony up an entry fee. About 400 of your fellow runners took the opportunity to set the record straight on what they primarily want, and how that sometimes differs from what races seem to focus on. Then I discussed the results with some race directors. What follows are the eight essentials that no race director can afford to ignore.
1) NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR EVENT’S PRIMARY PURPOSE.
Race organizers should remain focused on one goal in particular: putting on a good race. Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon, known for its on-course entertainment, race weekend festivities and generous goody bags, nevertheless takes this requirement seriously. As Executive Director Iris Simpson Bush notes, “It’s always been our goal to put together a fundamentally sound event. A lot of our key volunteers and staff members are runners. They’ve done marathons and they know what the runner needs in terms of the basics.”
When asked to identify which race aspects were most important, participants’ top 10 items were tied to either pre-race or race day logistics, including: an accurate, well-staffed course that’s closed to traffic and outfitted with adequate liquids and porta-potties; chip-timed results, posted quickly; pace-based start corrals; online registration and easy chip/bib pickup; and an informative, easy-to-use website.
2) PROVIDE GOOD VALUE FOR MY RACING DOLLARS. Read more…
